Former Captain Vili Ma’asi makes an early return to Ampthill as the newly appointed player/coach brings his Midlands Premier (formerly National League 3) 1stXV side to provide the opposition for the 1881s with a 13:00 kick off. Under Vili’s leadership Ampthill went from National 3 Midlands to National 1, our highest ever level, becoming an integral part of the club both on and off the field in the process. Having finished 4th in the league for each of the last 3 sasons, Lions will be pushing for promotion this year.

Newport, who can justifiably make a claim to be one of the greatest club sides in rugby, have an illustrious history which includes beating touring Southern Hemisphere opposition from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa (twice) & Tonga as well as providing 20 Welsh Captains, 31 British Lions, captains of England, Ireland, Canada, Fiji, Czech Rep and over 150 Welsh international players. Last season they finished 10th in the league with a played 15 won 7 record. The 15:00 kick off will see them provide the stiffest of tests for our 1stXV.

The bar will be open from mid-day for refreshments and the Rugby Championship game between South Africa and Argentina will be shown in the clubhouse after the pre-season fixtures.
