1st Round East Midlands Cup (Qualifying National Cup match)
Ampthill hosted Daventry (average house price £165,597) in the first round of what will hopefully be the long road to the National Cup Finals.
Neither team started well, the first 20 minutes littered with knock-ons and wayward passes. Ampthill’s first score followed a penalty, with Spurr taking the ball at pace to charge over. Five minutes later Spurr again burst through the defence but was tackled just short. From the ruck Richardson dummied the pass to slip over the line. Daventry came close from a 5m line out following a penalty, but Ampthill’s defence stood firm. Further scores from Herbert and Hunt took the half time score to 24-0.
Although still not performing to their potential, Ampthill kept the score ticking over after the interval, Clarke first bursting through the centre to score under the posts, and shortly after completing a flowing move from within their own half. Further scores from Batty, Carter and a brace from Richardson completed the afternoon’s action.
Another good defensive display by everyone with the forwards again laying the platform for the backs to run at their opponents time and time again, which ultimately proved the difference.
Welcome onboard to Philip, our newest recruit on his Ampthill debut.
A comprehensive victory, but Ampthill will have to increase their sharpness from that of a Christmas tangerine to a whole sack of limes if they are to achieve their ultimate goal this season.
