The scores were levelled after sustained Ampthill pressure led to Sarries being repeatedly penalised for offside, Lavery securing the try. Ampthill gained the lead after a lovely move saw Brazier taking the ball at pace and breaking clean through the Sarries defence, allowing a simple pass to Richardson to beat the full back. The score stayed at 14-7 until half time, and at this stage it was still anyones game.
Sarries started the second half well, but Ampthill’s defence kept them at bay. Batty moved Ampthill further ahead by winning the foot race to the line after the ball had been hacked forward, Prosser adding a great conversion in the blustery conditions. As the half wore on Ampthill were gaining in momentum, with a rolling maul allowing Spurr to increase the lead to 26-7. Shortly after Lavery skipped through a multitude of tackles passing overhead to Osborne to race to the line.
Ampthill added another converted try, with Suva breaking out of Ampthill’s 22, slipping a pass to Reaper whose pace beat the last defender. The last play of the match saw Ampthill stealing possession in their own 22, breaking clear with Richardson running around the last man to score. The conversion gave Ampthill a bonus point 45-7 victory.
Ampthill were not firing on all cylinders today, but as is often the case the second half saw them opening up and at times displaying the kind of rugby that very few teams can match.
