1881 and Extras Title Successes!

Whilst 1881s captain Gavin Williams was busy in Jersey making his 185th and final appearance for the club at the weekend, his 1881 side were confirmed as champions of the Halbro-Raging Bull Shield Division One following completion of the final round of matches, some of which were ‘double-headers’.

The 1881 finished with a record of Played 20, Won 18, Drew 1 and Lost 1 and 89 points – beating Richmond Vikings by 7 points and their only defeat being to 4th placed Rams!

This is the second time that the 1881s have won this title – the last time being in 2018-19, the same season that the 1st XV were promoted to the Championship. Richmond Vikings have won the title in every other season for the past ten years!

Following confirmation of the title, Head Coach Vili Ma’asi commented “This is a huge achievement for the club. I want to thank all of my players for their commitment in what was a difficult season, our Team Manager Steve for keeping us organised and especially my senior players Gavin and Aleki for helping with coaching.

We are a young team – alot of the boys playing their first season of senior rugby after graduating from the Academy and I’m excited at what we can achieve next year”

Vili, Steve and Gavin will collect the trophy at the annual presentation ceremony at the East India Club from league patron, former All Black and World Cup winning captain Sean Fitzpatrick next month!

Whilst celebrating club successes, the Extras (Ampthill 4th XV) were also confirmed as champions of the Herts and Middlesex Merit Table, Division Two winning 12 of their 15 matches and 65 points beating a very good Berkhamstead side into 2nd place! The Extras also finished 4th in the East Midlands Merit Table 1!

Team Manager Liam Duffin said “another fun season with the boys. It was good to play so much rugby after a few frustrating seasons interrupted by Covid and great to integrate a lot of young lads into senior rugby. I’m looking forward to next season already”
