1881s defeat Peterborough Lions 33-24 while the 1stXV prevail over Newport 29-14
Vili Ma’asi brought his Peterborough Lions 1stXV squad to Ampthill for the 1881s final pre-season fixture. A strong Ampthill side awaited them with a number of 1stXV match day players starting and playing the whole game.
A big, athletic and skillful Lions side pushed the 1881s all the way to lead 21-24 with 20 minutes gone in the second half. Amps had to and did raise their game scoring 2 further tries to secure the result.
On this evidence, Peterborough are set for a good season.
The 1stXV went behind to an early try before scoring 22 unanswered points after 60 minutes despite the young Newport side running the home defense ragged at times.
The sides exchanged converted tries in the last quarter to leave the score 29-14 at full time.
Amp’s tries were scored by hooker Aleki Lutui (breaking from a maul), wing Sam Baker (a 2 on 1 5m out), lock Paino Hehea (close range), flanker Syd Blackmore (who broke the line inside his own half, stepped the cover and scampered 55m) & scrum half Stef Liebenberg (who was in support to take the offload after wing Peter Weightman had bounced three defenders).
Head Coach Paul Turner commented “A good work out against a youthful Newport side who tested our defense, Syd Blackmore had a standout game.”
Our thanks to Peterborough & Newport, safe journey home and best of luck for the season.
