Ampthill welcomed Fylde to Dillingham Park on a bright, dry spring afternoon with a chilly southerly breeze and perfect playing conditions.
A game of contrasting styles saw the home side keeping the ball tight while the visitors ran the ball at every opportunity. Playing against the breeze Amps were dominant in the first quarter with much of the game played in Fylde territory, the second quarter saw the visitors come back into the game as A’s accuracy dropped. The second half was more even territorially but the hosts still outscored the visitors 4 tries to 3.
Fly Half Joe Tarrant opened the scoring on 10 minutes with a penalty goal from in front of the posts, hooker Aleki Lutui touched down twice, on 17 & 22 minutes, crashing over from close range for the first and then coming up with the ball after a trade mark catch & drive, Tarrant converting the former.
Fylde responded on the stroke of half time with a try and conversion from fly half Greg Smith after sustained pressure in the red zone leaving the score 15-7 t oranges.
The second half saw Ampthill add tries from Karim Lynch (blindside break from a red zone scrum), a penalty try after the visitors scrum was repeatedly under pressure, another from Lynch after a backs move and number 8 Maama Molitka completed the home sides scores with another close range effort, Tarrant converting all three.
The visitors offloading game was unstoppable for three tries of their own with full back Chris Briers baggng a hat-trick with Smith converting one.
Director of Rugby Mark Lavery commented “A curates egg of a game, we were precise and accurate for the first 20 minutes then gave away possession and territory. The pack took control in the tight in the second half but credit to Fylde, their attack from anywhere attitude caused us problems.”
