Ampthill U15s kicked off their first Herts/Middx league game of the season in front of the clubhouse under a bright sky.
Early exchanges saw both sides on the attack but defending equally well. The first try coming for Ampthill, after 14mins., with a typically strong run from Charlie Fleckney breaking the defence to score close to the posts. Aaron Foll, playing unusually at outside centre, crossed the whitewash shortly after for a second converted try at which point Ampthill were perhaps guilty of relaxing and thinking they had the game in the bag.
Cheshunt replied with an unconverted try on 25mins. Following some disappointing efforts in defence. Charlie Fleckney was able to score a further try to settle the home team though and at oranges Ampthill lead by 21 points to 5.
The second half saw Ampthill playing down the slope and looking to make good use of it. Liam Everitt making a number of well placed kicks into the oppositions half, the pick of which saw Henry Regan catching a cross kick on the full and at pace, with two defenders to beat Henry made no mistake.
Eugene scored a well executed try in the corner following a delightful move through the backs and this was backed up by Charlie Fleckney’s hat trick try and a strong run from Liam Everitt to cross the line in the dying minutes to secure a 47 to 5 win for the home side.
A very good start to Ampthill’s league season with good performances throughout the whole side.
