Bedford 19 v 59 Ampthill
Will apologise upfront for failing to hit the quality that Mr Scott and even our beloved leader Mr Ashby achieve in their Kafkaesque missives!
For those of you who had a day off this weekend, we had an East Midlands League game away against Bedford Blues B team at the unfamiliar setting of the Bedford Athletics track.
Sam C unfortunately had to pull out the night before with a shoulder injury – nothing to serious hopefully and look forward to seeing him back soon – a quick reshuffle of the pack resulted in us going with a three prop front row, with Pierce filling in at Hooker.
In standard Ampthill U14 style we started the game slower than Ashby getting to the bar, a moment of first game nerves resulted in a turnover in our 22 straight from the kick off, the boys reacted by lining up to the right unfortunately Bedford went to the left, not once but twice, a lack of communication and focus resulted in Bedford scoring in the corner within 45 seconds!
Not a great start, but following a positive and gentle talk from the coaches under the posts the boys sprang into life, a number of silly mistakes meant that we failed to get out of our half for the next five minutes but with little fear of Bedford repeating their first minute score.
As time went on the boys settled down and took total control of the game, led from the front at the scrum, in fact the scrum dominated all day, winning not just our own ball but pretty much all of theirs up until the last few scrums of the day. A big thank you and congratulations should go to Thomas, Pierce and Dylan for dominating up front and playing the whole game out.
I could lie and pretend to know the sequence of tries and who scored them, but I won’t, tries of note in the first half, Liam, once he managed to catch the ball, ran through traffic in our 22 and ran the length of the pitch to score under their posts, Ross (Captain for the day) got at least one in the corner and Charlie S made an impressive snipe to score himself.
Pierce managed to drag half the blues team over the line and most impressive was Bartek smashing through two defenders to score on his debut, Chad took over the kicking duties for the day and kicked, again I’d be lying if I pretended to know how many for sure!
After a few changes at half time the scoring continued, Joe made a powerful penetrative run from the centre to score despite two players hanging off him while Pierce showed a turn of pace to score from inside his own half, including running over a number of attempted tackles.
We then got a bit overconfident, stopped playing our phases and making tackles, resulting in the Blue’s scoring two tries, either side of another score from Ampthill, the boys also tell me that Finley definitely scored in the last seconds of the game but the ref failed to give it, tough lines Forest, final score 19-59.
Other notable mentions are Billy on his debut, lots of promise shown from that young man, Mr Hensby was awesome all day and in fact Adam, Josh, Ross and Ali were a dominant back row today, making their tackles and winning turnovers all across the park. Chad had a confident day at 10, Ed was impressive until he was forced off in the first half with a dead leg, in fact all the boys played well today.
