Ampthill 1stXV & 1881s At Henley, Sat Aug 11 2018, Pre-Season
Ampthill’s new look squads travelled to Dry Leas on a cloudy but dry afternoon to find perfect underfoot conditions.
As usual, Henley’s hospitality was outstanding, Amps players and spectators always look forward to visiting such friendly hosts.
Henley Hawks 7 1stXV 40
A’s squad had an unfamiliar look with debuts in the pack for Oliver Walliker at Hooker and lock John Kopku, dual registered from Saracens. The bench contained much experience with hooker Aleki Lutui, prop Soane Tonga’uiha on debut and flankers Joe Bercis & Syd Blackmore.
All but two backs were making their debuts, scrum half Euan McKirdy, inside centre Kieran Whyte (both signed from Boroughmuir), outside centre Oliver Morris (dual registered from Saracens) and wings William Foster (signed from Loughborough) & Spencer Sutherland (signed from Esher).
The first team took on a well drilled and effective Hawks team who were unlucky to not be leading the contest at half time as, with the score tied at 7-7, they missed a last kick of the half penalty goal from in front of the posts.
Ampthill gelled in the second half running out 7-40 winners.
After an excellent hit out that benefited both clubs, Amps wish Henley good luck for the season.
Henley Bulls 5 1881s 50
The 1881s squad included 5 debuts, up front Charlie Frankham (signed form Wellingborough), Academy graduates Peter Smith & Hayden Thomas while the backs included fly half Michael Waters (signed from Leeds Carnegie) and New Zealander Bailey Thomas who impressed from Full Back.
The 1881s won well 5 v 50 but needed the competitive game to press their case for inclusion in the 1stXV match day squad.
