A squad of 18 players was selected to travel for this age group’s first league fixture in the HML League at Teddington RFC in West London this morning. Well done to the parents and coaches for getting through the traffic and dealing with an all too familiar parking shortage!
After a good warm up the team were fortunate to receive a few words of encouragement and pose for a photo with Wales and Lions legend Sam Warburton who was visiting Teddington RFC this morning.
After a first time line up for studs check and then a few words from Sir for the Skipper, Front Row and Nines it was time to get down to business.
Conditions were ideal with bright skies, a light breeze and an excellent playing surface. Ampthill got off to a great start scoring their first league try after 5 minutes of the game. No conversions at this age so 0-5. The boys kept working hard and scored again two minutes later for a 0-10 lead.
A couple of missed tackles let Teddington back in for 10-10 – another try for both teams meant it was 15-15 at oranges.
The second half started much the same as the first half with Ampthill scoring directly from the Teddington kick off. The game remained competitive, but Ampthill had a little bit more than their opponents eventually running out 20-30 winners!
An excellent introduction to competitive rugby – the team are looking forward to building on this game for the challenges that lie ahead in the league.
Well done to all the players.
