Ampthill Under 15’s started their EML campaign at Dillingham Park against Peterborough in the September sunshine. After a well earned draw in their opening fixture at Fullerians, head coach Paul Allen was keen the boys continued with another positive display against their rivals from Cambridgeshire.
Ampthill started the game with a good spell of possession and opened the scoring with a try from Archie Barrett, this was quickly followed by a first try of the season from winger Haydn Williams with Harrison Wade adding a third try making the score 17-0 with the conversion.
Peterborough replied soon after with their first try to make the score 17-5, Sam Garwood then opened his account for the season with a try from a lineout, the next try came in similar fashion from second row Jo Campbell, giving Ampthill a healthy 27-5 lead. Ampthill’s well worked lineout moves were a constant threat throughout and the forwards reaping the rewards of the time spent on the training ground working on their set pieces.
Ampthill continued to press forward with James Randall scoring their sixth try of game and increasing the lead to 32-5, this was followed by a spell of possession from Peterborough scoring a couple of tries, the second of which being converted to make the score 32-17. Ampthill completed the scoring with a great team try with the forward pack making considerable ground and feeding the ball out to flying winger Haydn Williams to score his second try of the game and give Ampthill a healthy 37-17 victory.
This was a well-earned win for Ampthill against a well organised Peterborough side with a particularly strong and big set of forwards, head coach Allen utilised his whole squad with a number of players gaining valuable game time.
