Here is the last match report of 2014, great news for you all as it means you don’t have to suffer my ramblings for a couple of weeks.
We made the short hop to Northampton to a muddy pitch but dry and cold day to play in our East Midlands League against Northampton Men’s Own (NMO). Helpfully played at Northampton Casuals ground just to complicate matters
This league is set up as our B team league and although we don’t have a strict A and B team structure we do like to give all players as much game time as possible.
The NMO team was somewhat depleted due to some winter sniffles and so they had no subs, we had plenty and in the end we lent a couple of players to them when injuries took them down to 13 players. Thanks to Joe and Finley for pulling on the opposition jersey during the second half.
So to the game.
Sadly not the best start in terms of basic skills – passing, running straight, tackling and catching and lots of early errors caused quite a bit of frustration for the players and coaches alike.
The scrum was solid all day with plenty of possession being won against the put in any only one loss on our put in.
NMO put us under some pressure at times but didn’t really look like crossing the whitewash and once we had woken up, we started to play rugby and scored through Joe. The score was out wide and Alex wasn’t able to convert despite a decent strike of the ball. 0-5.
Next to score was Ross, after a decent break. He managed to score under the posts and Alex got the extra 2. 0-12.
After this try, the floodgates opened and NMO’s heads dropped. The sequence of scoring was:
Ethan – Alex converted 0-19.
Jamie – Scored after a long lay-off from injury and ran pretty much the length of the pitch to score under posts. Sadly the injury looks to have flared up again and so we wish him a speedy recovery. Alex converted 0-26.
Pierce was next to score, Alex not able to convert 0-31
Jake was next on the list, Alex converted 0-38
Ross scored his second of the day as was promptly subbed to avoid the hat trick at the request of Mr Denton. Alex Converted 0-45.
Alex scored a nice try after exploiting a lack of defence down the blind-side of a scrum. No conversion 0-50.
Alfie then scored from a scrum on the other side of the pitch and again left Alex with a tough attempt to convert. 0-55.
The final score of the day was met by frustration from one Fynn and joy by another Fin. The first one was very frustrated to be tackled without he ball when clean though, the second one got there before the NMO players and scored just to the right of the posts. Alex converted and put the score to 0-62.
This is the second game in this league where we haven’t conceded and that it something to be proud of.
So the score was massive and clearly we could have done this without some decent play. But as ever, plenty to improve on over the rest of the season, particularly around support / pod play and being more aggressive in rucks and tackling.
