Ampthill travel to Maccelsfield’s, Priory Park this Saturday for the first ever fixture at 1stXV level between the two clubs.
Macclesfield can trace it’s origins back to 1874 when they operated under the auspices of the 8th Cheshire Rifle Volunteers. In 1877 Macclesfield Rugby Football Club was formed playing at the Cricket Club followed a year later by affiliation to the Union.
1927 saw the formation of the present club with home games being played at Congleton Road, in 1928 the club moved to new ground and headquarters at the Cock Inn, Henbury followed in 1932 by a move Fallibroome, a stone’s throw from the present site.
After lodging at King’s School when the Fallibroome ground became unavailable, the Club opened a new ground and clubhouse on London Road on 9 September 1950 while 1961 saw a move to another new ground at Tytherington before the final move to the present ground, Priory Park in 1980.
1971 saw the formation of the Mini & Junior Section, 1995 participation in the first RFU sanctioned trial league in England while in 1996 the Co-operative Bank Lounge and new changing rooms were opened. The club’s astro-turf facility was opened in 2004 while 2009 saw the 1stXV promoted to National 1 (level 3 in the RFU hierarchy) and 2010 the club’s highest ever finish in the league, 4th in National 1.
Since then Macclesfield have y0-y0’d between National 1 & National 2 achieving promotion back to National 1 last season as Champions.
This season Macclesfield have a played 5, won 1, drawn 1 record to lie 12th in the National 1 table most recently drawing 24-24 away at Blaydon.
Last week Ampthill recorded their best result and best performance of the season in defeating Moseley at Dillingham Park 4 tries to 1, leaving them 4th in the table with a played 5 won 4 record.
Amps ring the changes in the starting XV this week, up front there are 5 changes, James Fish starts at hooker with Matt Collins at tighthead, Nick Isiekwe returns at lock, Ben Earl at blindside and Rob Bell at openside. In the backs Kevin Barrett is fit to start at scrum half while Elliot Reeder makes his first appearance this season at outside centre. On the bench Aleki Lutui, Brett Sturgess, Joe Bercis & Ben Calder are rotated.
