In the first of two pre-season friendlies on The Olney Field, the 1881s hosted local friends Letchworth RFC and it was great to see a couple of Ampthill old boys among their match-day squad – Half Backs Kieron Davies at scrum-half and Josh Sharp at fly-half.
A good crowd had gathered eager to watch live rugby after the summer break and both teams played some open expansive rugby. Ampthill fielded a very strong side with a number of players looking to force selection next weekend at The Arms Park on Friday night and demonstrated their pedigree to open up the game and force errors from their newly promoted Level 6 opposition! To their credit, Letchworth fronted up to the Mob and stuck to task throughout the three periods of the game.
The whole match was played in great spirit and the two teams shared 12 tries including a hat-trick for 1881s winger Finlay Parker, including a fine individual effort turning defence into attack to run 60m and beat multiple defenders to score in the corner!
Josh Sharp enjoyed a 100% success rate from the tee for the visitors and Ampthills Liam Everitt had a high success rate of his own in addition to two tries of his own!
Ampthill are grateful to Letchworth for fulfilling the fixture despite injuries in their squad and wish them every success for the season ahead.
