Hambro-Raging Bull Shield Division One table toppers Rosslyn Park 2’s arrived at Dillingham Park with a “7 from 7” record this season, and with the Mob also unbeaten this was potentially a season defining fixture for both teams.
Ampthill defended strongly against the early pressure from Roslyn for the first 10 minutes but on their first visit into the opposition half, Ampthill came away with 7 points following full back Will Partington having seen space behind the defence at a ruck 15metres out and scrum half Lewis Findlay putting the chip over for Partington to run onto.
Ampthill grew stronger through the half and an Ampthill penalty and Park try right on half time made it 10-7 at the break.
Second half and with a strong wind behind Ampthill looked to settle down and play the territory game deep in the visitors half with a strong kicking game from Lewis Findlay at 9 and Liam Everitt at 10. Early reward saw full back Will Partington make a break from the visitors 10m line and floating out a long pass to Henry Hazlem wide out on the wing to finish from 5m out, 15-7.
A converted try after 60 minutes and a penalty saw the momentum switch to Roslyn Park and the score at 15-17 with just over 10 minute to go. The final phase of the game was Ampthills, and a scrum 10m out saw no.8 Paddy Ryan pick up at the back and take a tired looking defence over the line with him under the posts for 22-17.
Liam Everitts kick from his own 10m line into the corner and a charge down gave captain Gav Williams the chance to touch down wide out to the right and seal the game off at 29-17.
A good game of rugby with plenty of skills on show and Ampthill 1881’s looking forward to their fixture away at Barnes next Saturday.
