Ampthill Academy recorded their second win of the season on Saturday at Nuneaton Rugby Club!
Head Coach Paul Allen reports:
“Another win on the road but it wasn’t pretty and we definitely will look to tidy things up over the next few weeks.
Despite that, we could not have started much better as we went through several phases of play, offloading for fun before centre Harry Holman breezed in under the posts. Conversion completed 0-7 after a few minutes.
However, if we had any thoughts of an easy afternoon that was soon forgotten.
The Nuns had some very big physical players and used them to good effect. They focused on carrying really tight to the breakdown and kept control of the ball really well. The most pleasing thing was our defence, though.
Despite the battering runs, we didn’t buckle and mentions must go to Josh B, Carlo and Aaron Fitz who put in some big hits.
We welcomed Oakley into our ranks who is a formidable presence in the pack and we had glimpses of what’s to come when he came off the bench and he carried like a bulldozer into the Nuns’ defensive line.
As we made changes, some of the younger academy players entered the fray and really showed what a tenacious bunch of lads they are. It was during this period that Ampthill took control and scored a couple of cracking tries.
Luke Howells particularly, topping off a great performance by stripping the ball off a Nuns player and forcing his way over the line.
Nuns did score 2 tries which were well-deserved but we saw the game out to win 12-29 which was a solid result as we didn’t play to our potential if we are honest but ground out the win.”
