Ampthill U18 Girls kicked off their season away to Cambridge in the National Cup. The pool also contains Hitchin so not as much traveling this season.
Ampthill are rebuilding with the loss of the more experienced girls graduating to the Ladies side or University and a have strong influx of U15’s from last year. Cambridge are 3 years into their journey with girls rugby and the first year of U18’s so the stage was set for a close game.
It was exactly that with Ampthill dominating the first 20 minutes but not taking their chances but gradually scoring a fine try through Jess with Lilly converting. The A’s continued to press the Cambridge line but a resolute defence held them out and Cambridge scored a well worked try just before the break to give them renewed confidence. HT 5-7.
With a squad size of 21 players, Ampthill made a few changes and Cambridge took advantage of some of the rustiness of the new side to score after 10 minutes. This was followed 8 minutes later by another fine try from the backline making the scores 17-7. Ampthill regrouped and with the clock ticking started to dominate the exchanges again working a forwards try for Jess after 3 attempts to cross the line. The conversion was missed and time running out the A’s narrowly lost a great game to watch. FT 17-12.
Lots to learn and more clinical finishing would have seen the girls win this, hats off to Cambridge on taking their chances and the girls are looking forward to a return fixture in the New Year.
