The club are saddened to report that Mike Gonse passed away recently having been a resident at the Cheshire Home for many years.
Mike captained the Club’s 4th XV in seasons 1977-78 and 1978-79. He coached in the Mini & Youth section and also refereed the Club’s lower after his playing career was over.
A young-person-oriented coach, Mike really cared about the minis and youth players in his charge over many years and the players responded with great loyalty to him.
One of his greatest achievements was the organization of the under 14s tour of the USA in the Spring of 1992. This was a great achievement in realising the potential of the young people and their ability to self- fundraise much of the money to subsidise the tour. Locations for matches included Annapolis and Lancaster in the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania. A team photo can still be seen on the clubhouse wall.
Mike was a PE teacher for many years mainly in middle schools in Bedfordshire and finished his career working at Brooklands Middle School in Leighton Buzzard. He also had a spell as a taxi driver but his first love was always young people either in the school or at Ampthill Rugby Club.
