Result: Olney 25 – Ampthill Tigers 10
Ampthill Tigers headed to Olney for what would, as always be a tough encounter.
Although great early defence by the Tigers kept Olney at bay and saw one attempt over the line held up, a momentary lack of concentration saw Olney break the line to score.
The forwards then took control of the ball and there were some powerful runs through the middle, an offload from one of these breaks was picked up by our centre who spotted a gap and ran half the pitch to level the score.
The game then saw the introduction of the newest player to the Ampthill Tigers and keen to make a mark in his first game he lined up Olney’s biggest player and roared into the tackle knocking him flying!!
Just before half time an Olney kick took an unkind bounce and saw Olney two tries to one up at half time.
The beginning of the second half saw the Tigers forwards dominant again, but Olney edged three tries to one up against the run of play.
The Tigers scrum half then made a darting break from the back of the scrum, side stepped the referee and Onley’s full back to bring the score back to three tries to two.
In the last quarter the Tigers didn’t have the decisions go their way or get the ‘rub of the green’! Frustration grew and with a few key Ampthill players heads started to drop, which saw Olney run in two late tries.
Overall, the result didn’t really reflect the game and the players are improving each week and learning that they can get easy yards with powerful runs and build a platform for the back to work off.
