1stXV Secures Bonus Point Win At Sale
An outstanding first half in which the visitors outscored their hosts three tries to nil in dreadful conditions playing against the elements set the winning platform.
Sale won the toss and decided to use both the conditions & the slope. A penalty against Sale for a breakdown infringement just inside their half saw Ampthill centre Mickey Wilson kick to the corner. A trademark catch and drive resulted in Tongan hooker Aleki Lutui coming up with the ball for an unconverted try.
Sale responded with a period of pressure, kicking a penalty goal in the 23rd minute through Wilkinson.
From the restart Amps were deep in the hosts territory with wing Will Foster given the ball on the right on the home 22, he shrugged off the first defender and stepped the second to touch down on 27 minutes, full back James Pritchard adding the extras.
The 35th minute saw centre Sam Hanks score the try of the match after multiple forward drives inched closer and closer to the Sale line. An explosive carry by flanker Will Allman was followed by two quick sets of hands with a sublime offload from prop Soane Tonga’uiha putting Hanks in under the posts, Pritchard converting. At oranges the visitors led by 3-19 after a fine first forty minutes.
Sale came out firing after the break, dominating territory and possession for the first 15 minutes, eventually crossing for a converted converted try on 53 minutes.
With their tails now up the hosts were a handful but Ampthill worked hard to contain them before gradually turning the screw with Foster crossing for his second try on 69 minutes which went unconverted.
As time ran down Amps, again in Sale territory, were awarded a penalty which Pritchard converted to take the visitors three scores clear and close out the game.
Head Coach Paul Turner commented “A really professional performance on the road capped by the try bonus and five points.“
