The 2015/16 season was a fantastic success for the Under 12’s. We started the season with quite a few new arrivals, this nicely offsetting those who had decided to spend their Sunday mornings doing something other than enjoying the benefits of Dillingham Park at its best. We had 35 boys registered & 30 attending most Sunday mornings.
The boys quickly & successfully took to this years new rules, with the introduction of five man (contested) scrums, & hand offs. As the season progressed, the boys got used to playing in ‘positions’ and learning the different skills involved.
The highlights of the season included being runners up at the Peterborough Festival in October where we narrowly lost out in a very hard fought final against Oundle.
The annual Mobbs tournament was in November at a frosty St Neots ground where the team managed to finish the group unbeaten , but were knocked out on tries scored following a 2-2 draw with Biggleswade. Those boys that have been in the age group for a while will have very fond memories of the Mobbs tournament having won it twice & finished runners up once.
It was our turn to host this years Beds Cup & due to some real hard work behind the scenes, Ampthill RUFC put on another fantastic tournament. Both the A & B teams enjoyed a really successful day .The B team finished runners up in the plate final, with a number of the team playing in their first ever tournament, they really were a credit to themselves & the club. The A team played their best rugby of the season reaching the final ,conceding only 1 try in the process , despite having the vast majority of the possession ,they were unable to break down a stubborn Bedford defence, and lost 1-0.
The season finished off with our ‘last’ Minis Tour to Norfolk, with 21 boys and their families, on the Saturday we played an annual visit to Wymondham where the boys lost 3-1in the rain and mud !!
On the Sunday we made the trip to Holt, and having had the kits laundered, the boys put on a fantastic days rugby. They won 3 games & were unfortunate to loose 3-2 against the hosts,on the day we scored 16 tries & only conceded 4. All the coaches agreed that the boys should be really proud of their efforts & that their team spirit & attitude shone through.
Scott Wade stood down as head coach at Christmas when Gary Hobart & Darren Prosser took over, Scott enjoyed great success as head coach and all the parents recognise his hard work & effort with the squad since they were Under 6’s.We look forward to next season & wish Gary & Darren every success as Head Coaches of this age group.
I would also like to thank all the coaches for their hard work over the season,& all the parents for their continued support , and finally all the volunteers that make Ampthill the wonderful club that it is.
