U13 EAST MIDLANDS CUP Amps 12 ONs 19
A heavy frost combined with fog meant a chilly start to our East Midlands Cup quarter final. The first 15 minutes proved to be the key to unlocking the game as boys were forced to defend hard against a very determined and well drilled ONs side. The zip and commitment to the breakdown that we’re become accustomed to matched the conditions, dull and wet! That, combined with some lack-lustre tackling and poor positional awareness, eventually let the opposition through to score 2 converted tries. The boys then seemed to get their tails up and the last 10 minutes of the first half was much, much better. We fought our way down to within 5 metres of the whitewash and very nearly scored just at the end of the first half, so 0 – 14 at oranges.
A few choice words from Rob (I won’t mention what they were!) at half time saw more determined team run out in the second half. Xander bundled over for an unconverted try after chasing our kick-off and pressurising the opposition. We spent most of the next 10 minutes camped in the ONs half, but a fine move and a few slipped tackles saw them score their final unconverted try. Some great rugby followed with Dan crashing over the line only to be denied by the referee.
Proceedings were wrapped up with a solid move started by Bradley in midfield on to Harry who dummied and broke the gain line then on to Charlie who accelerated into space created by Harry drawing 3 ONs defenders. Superb support play from Eniola allowed him to run onto Charlie’s offload and sprint past the remaining defenders to score a fine try converted by Harry.
To summarise, I’ll quote what one of the ONs parents was overheard saying… “that was a great game, I would have paid money to see that!”. Well done boys!
