U13 HML LEAGUE London Scottish 19 Ampthill 17
A bright morning and an early start coach trip to London for our first away league game. The trip down was uneventful and we arrived early only to find out that some numpty (I won’t mention any names but it starts with an A) had forgotten to bring the shirts! Fortunately our hosts came up trumps and lent us a spare set so drama over and the boys settled into preparing for the match.
The first half was a repeat of our last match and before we knew it we’d conceded 19 points with no reply, but to boys credit, their heads didn’t drop and they battled on and again the last 5 minutes of the half saw them almost score in the corner after a very determined spell of pressure from the forwards and great break by Bradley.
Rob rallied the troops at half time and made a few adjustments to the lineup. This worked and the boys started to get the better of the oppo in all areas. Alex opened our scoring a few minutes into the half with a well worked pick & go from the back of a scrum. Unfortunately the wind pushed Harry’s well struck conversion wide. Two further tries were adjudged to have been held up by the referee and the very determined and aggressive defense certainly gave that impression… oh for an U13 TMO! A very tight game ensued mostly in the correct half of the pitch and six minutes later Bradley crashed through the defenders to score with Harry placing a perfect kick through the uprights from the corner.
A further try was held up and we battled on with Blunty working like a terrier behind the forwards. The hard work eventually paid off and Dan managed to squeeze another pick & go into the corner. Harry didn’t manage the conversion, but we were new withing 2 points of the opposition with 5 minutes to go. The kick-off was soon run into the oppo’s half by Billy,Harry and Josh, with Christopher fighting his way through 7 tackles to get the boys within 7 metres of the whitewash. The Scotts were defending well and we unfortunaltely conceded a penalty 5 metres out. The kick to touch ended the game, so 19 – 17 at full time.
Well done to the boys for working so hard to turn the game around! One small consolation is the bonus point the boys earned for being within 5 points of the winners.
