U14 2016-17 Season Review

The start of the season saw some new faces and additions to the U14 squad growing the number of players to enable the squad to consistently field two teams. This was due mostly to our traditional annual schools invitation sevens competition in October an event now regionally-recognised as a pathway for non-rugby players into the game and a credit to Ampthill Club’s community ethos.
Matches were underway immediately with a fixture the week after registration and subsequent competitive fixtures following thick and fast. The squad has done plenty of travelling, making friends with some new opposition as well as cementing relationships with traditional and well established foes. The ethos of the squad has and will continue to be that we play with two evenly mixed teams apart from when playing in the East Midlands Cup where we will make appropriate selections.

Highlights of the season include an East Midlands Cup Final victory beating Northampton Old Scouts 70-7 in a game where the score may have surprised a few but was totally deserved, winning the Kettering 7’s tournament where those that played put their bodies on the line time and time again with grit and determination not to lose and a Bedfordshire cup final victory against Biggleswade 59-3 where all in the squad have contributed and played a part having played both the semi final and final of this competition with mixed ability teams. Success can be measured in a number of ways and watching the B team destroy a combined Old Scouts & Kettering team also ranks highly in the achievements of the squad this season.
So overall East Midlands Champions, Kettering 7’s Winners, Bedfordshire County champions and one of, if not, the best overall squad in the region. The future looks bright.

The season ended with a tour to Toulon where the boys had a lot of fun and as part of the weekend had a training session run by Welsh International, British & Irish Lion and Toulon player Leigh Halfpenny.
To finish, yet another extremely enjoyable season to be involved with the U14’s. The boys continue to develop and have embraced all challenges that have come their way. The coaches would like to thank all those that have helped with the success of the age group including our new sponsors and the parents for all the continued support in getting players where they need to be but also for all the help with the various volunteer duties. However the biggest thanks goes to all the players whose commitment, hard work and ability make the age group the success that it is.
