Following double promotions at the end of last season to the East Midlands Championship league and the Herts/Middlesex Division 2 the season ahead was always going to be a tougher one. The squad had grown to 28 players with a few players relocating clubs to Ampthill and a couple of players returning to rugby, all helped to strengthen this squad.
Early season training and friendly fixtures went well and the lads started their East Midlands league fixtures with a comfortable 46 – 3 win over Daventry. A very tight game against St. Neots, just before Christmas, saw the A’s win by one point in a good game. All the East Midlands games were won and the side finished top of the EML Championship with a plus points score of 230.
The Herts/Middlesex Division 2 fixtures were late getting under way and we played our first game away at Ealing in late November losing in a frustrating game which was repeated in the following two HML fixtures against Ruislip and
Fullerians where we also lost games that could have been won. Mid season and played 3 lost 3 was not looking good in this strong division. The tide was turned though away at Wasps with a convincing 31 to 5 win and this was followed by victories over Tring and Bedford Blues which in the end saw the u16s finish third and Bedford Blues finish bottom of the pile. A case of what might have been for us.
In the Beds Cup final we beat Bedford Blues and then travelled to Biggleswade for the final. Ampthill outplayed Biggleswade in a convincing 0 to 37 points victory to retain the cup for another season.
Of the 25 matches played 18 were won and 7 lost so another good season of rugby from a great bunch of lads who have really bonded as a group and who will hopefully be back next September to play at under 17s level.
The teams’ coaches have enjoyed another good season with the lads and thanks to Head Coach Steve Everitt, Leigh Clark, Jay Tovey, Joey Evans and Paul Brown.
There are a number of the lads now playing representative rugby with the DPP and EPDG and on Sunday the 17th April 2016 Soni Ma-Asi made his England U16 debut against Wales U16s. Congratulations to them all.
