So the chapter closes on the epic journey of this remarkable group of young men, finishing where it started by becoming the Bedfordshire County champions.
Entering the quarter finals with a number of players unavailable due to injury and sickness, the squad was supplemented by a number of very enthusiastic & talented under 17`s. The quarter final was an away game at Biggleswade and it was a slow
start given the team only managed 2 training sessions together before this game! However, once settled some of the attacking rugby in windy conditions was exceptional supported by a forward pack of mainly the U17`s and we came out on top.
On to the semi final they marched to host arch rivals Bedford in what turned out to be one of the most talked about games for years. It was bruising, it was tense, it was fast with neither team giving an inch.
Ampthill fielding an almost
unchanged team from the quarter final but with players playing out of position, in front of the biggest crowd for years the score ebbed and flowed to the final 6 minutes Ampthill found themselves 12 points down.
This team never know when they are beat. The never say die attitude coming to the fore the team, busting a gut at every breakdown, tackling anything and everything that moved, turning the ball over on their own try line and in the final minutes, scoring two tries and converting one with the last kick of the game the score was tied at 33 all.
Ampthill came out as winners on tries scored. (Much to the disgust of the opposition who incorrectly interpreted the rules).
The reaction of the players at the final whistle showed how much it meant to them, everything was left on the park.
This turned out to be the final as Stockwood Park ended up being suspended.
Many thanks to the under 17`s team and players who played a massive part in supporting the Colts and helping us win the Cup again.
(And for letting us hijack their training sessions incorporating our Colts and U17’s together).
We have not mentioned any names as there are far too many to mention in this report, but they know who they are and what commitment they showed.
Many thanks to all involved in the journey throughout the previous years.
