On Sunday Ampthill U18 girls played Market Harborough in the Area 4 Plate playoff to determine 3rd & 4th place behind Mansfield who defeated ON’s on the same day in the Cup.
Ampthill started well with Bethan winning the first coin toss of the season and playing to the set game plan, but concede a try early on against the run of play through missed tackles. They regrouped and scored two tries in quick succession with a fine training ground lineout move of a catch and drive with SiSi pealing off the back to feed Elena to score her first try of the season and another powerful run by SiSi to score before the break. 5-10 Halftime.
Harborough stared well in the second half getting the ball, which they were starved of in the first half to their two huge centres, allowing them to equal the scores 10-10. A’s hit back immediately with Paris scoring a nice poachers try after a mix up in defence by the opposition. 10-15. What happened next was the girls contrived to lose the game by not sticking to the plan of keeping the ball. Also, some rushed decisions, throwing the ball away at times and starting to miss tackles, allowed Market Harborough to run in two more tries converting one making the final score 22-15.
A really close game that the A’s could have won and the girls will learn a valuable lesson from today. The improvements they have shown this season have been fantastic, by coming 4th in Area 4 means the girls are nicely in the top 20 teams in the country, meaning it’s not all doom and gloom. Also with 12 U18 girls featuring in East Midlands games this coming Sunday at Ipswich against Eastern Counties and NLD the girls are flying the flag well for the club.
