Wimbledon 2nd XV 10 v 12 Ampthill 1881

Ampthill arrived in glorious sunshine at Wimbledon Rugby Club where a well-attended Ladies Lunch was underway. Kick-off was delayed due to 1881 arriving late due to traffic congestion and in truth, Ampthill never got off the bus properly during the 80 minutes.

It was Wimbledon who got first opportunities for points as the 1881 discipline was poor. Dons kicker missing a difficult kick but this seemed to spur Ampthill into the game a bit as the phases got better and holes started to appear in the defence for Wimbledon. Patient phase play allowed Spencer Sutherland to offload inside to Baily Thomas who scored wide on the right. Wimbledon hit back with another penalty attempt which was successfully converted to make the score 3-5 at half time. A pretty accurate score to tell the story of the half.

Ampthill were unable to finish off scoring chances having no fewer than four disallowed tries. Ranging from knock-on over the line to a final forward pass. Once some accuracy returned to the 1881 game, Ollie Walliker broke down the blindside from a rolling maul to score in the corner. Micky Wilson converting magnificently from the right touchline and a bit of breathing space appeared. While the Ampthill coaching staff were hoping the squad could build a score, Wimbledon made life difficult for the 1881 and scored a converted try by the posts which finished the game 10-12.

Positives, no big injuries and win on the road.

Lots and lots to work on.
